Apple backs down on EU ban for ‘Fortnite'-maker Epic Games

Apple has reversed its decision to ban Epic Games, the maker of ‘Fortnite,’ from launching its own app store on iOS in Europe. This comes after European Union officials announced an investigation into the matter. It is the first major test of Europe’s new digital competition rules, which went into force on Thursday. Apple’s decision means that Epic Games will be able to bring ‘Fortnite’ back to iPhones in Europe. Apple stated that it reached the decision following conversations with Epic, during which Epic committed to following Apple’s new EU-focused policies. The move comes after the European Commission requested information from Apple regarding the allegations made by Epic. The European Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires app stores to allow app downloads from third-party sources. Apple’s solution to this rule is a system allowing developers to create all-new iOS apps functioning as self-contained app marketplaces. Epic Games had previously accused Apple of revoking their developer account due to their history of criticizing the company and for intentionally violating Apple’s terms to expose anticompetitive behavior. Apple’s decision to reinstate Epic’s developer account may signify the enforcement of the Digital Markets Act.
